Profit for employment
The palm oil sector has been selected by the Government of Ghana as one of the key strategic pillars for job creation and poverty reduction. According to an official government document palm oil could easily become Ghana’s next biggest commodity after cocoa.
PSI Ghana
The President’s Special Initiative (PSI) on oil palm is projected to put under cultivation 300,000 hectares of new oil palm plantation to meet domestic demand. This is expected to increase to 500,000 hectares in subsequent years to meet the demand in the West African sub-region. In the long term, the PSI on oil palm is expected to generate an export revenue of $1.6 billion annually and employ about 1.2 million people. The Ghanaian region has a rich supply of land suitable for palm oil cultivation with a belt stretching from Dunkwa-On-Offin in the north-west, to the Assin Fosu and Abura-Asebu-Kwamankese district, Ajumako-Enyan-Essiam and finally the Breman Asikuma in the east.
Selecting the farmer
APD focuses on commercial oil palm plantations in collaboration with local farmers. This is achieved by creating well-structured farms and supplying the best the materials and requirements. New agricultural techniques ensure that a maximum yield per hectare is generated, so that local farmers have an above average income. Palm oil plantages are relatively labour -intensive. A hectare of palm oil plantations offers permanent employment for four people over 26 years. The generated employment increases the wealth of the locals and helps reducing the migration of young Ghanaians from rural to urban areas in search of nonexistent jobs.
